San Diego, CA—April 8, 2014—“Team Sparkle”, the all-female Ultra Ragnar Relay team made nonprofit Girl Power 2 Cure proud as they completed the 2014 Ragnar Relay So Cal. The team of six seasoned runners completed the 195-mile race along the beautiful California coastline, running one mile for each of 195 girls who cannot run due to Rett Syndrome; a debilitating neurological disorder.
Team Sparkle runner, Allison Foley, explained why the race was so important. “This race was personal for me as Rett Syndrome affects my 10-year-old daughter Emma and I can speak firsthand about the devastation of this neurological disorder that has stolen Emma’s independence,” Foley added, “but what Rett Syndrome cannot steal from Emma or any of the girls it affects, is their courage, bravery, strength, determination and hope—traits that we believe are characteristic of our team and of this great race.”
The dedicated Ultra Ragnar team raised $30,000 to go towards Rett Syndrome research at the time of this release. Adding to the runners’ motivation, and to the final tally, Sparkle Athletics, the team’s sponsor, donated $5 for each time the runners passed an opposing team; referred to as “road kill.” Carrie Lundell, owner of Sparkle Athletics and member of “Team Sparkle” said that her own motivation to run for Girl Power 2 Cure was sparked by meeting the young girls and their families whose lives have been changed by Rett Syndrome. “Running each mile for a girl with Rett Syndrome, being able to picture their sweet faces as we tackled 195 miles from Huntington Beach to San Diego, might be the greatest motivation I’ve ever had during a race. After meeting these families and these girls in the Rett community, no hill will ever seem too hard to climb; no distance will ever seem too long to run.”
Each member of the spirited “Team Sparkle” ran approximately 32.5 miles throughout the course while decked out in capes and sparkly running skirts! The 38-hour race took the team from Huntington Beach to Coronado in San Diego, California.

ABOUT RETT SYNDROME: Rett Syndrome is a debilitating neurological (movement) disorder that predominantly affects females. Baby girls are born “normal” but begin to lose acquired skills between the ages of 1-3 years old. Rett Syndrome is the leading genetic cause of severe impairment in girls – most cannot speak, walk or use their hands. Another little girl is born with Rett Syndrome every 90 minutes. The disease is as prevalent as Cystic Fibrosis, ALS and Huntington’s. Despite their physical disabilities, girls with Rett Syndrome are believed to be functioning mentally at a much higher level than previously thought. Rett Syndrome is a potentially REVERSIBLE disorder. The disorder is caused by a single gene mutation that leads to underproduction of an important brain protein. Research has proven once protein levels are back to normal levels, symptoms subside. Since 2006, Girl Power 2 Cure, Inc. has been working to find the girls and women trapped inside their physical prisons, help them and their families, and fund the cure for this potentially reversible disorder that impacts approximately 1 in every 5,000 girls.
